Your hair growth is determined by you genes, not by your habits. If our lifestyles affected how much hair we had then we'd all be hairy in the winter like a dog. Anyway, the first thing you need to do is start using shaving cream or gel to lubricate your skin when you shave...this will help to keep your skin healthy and reduce the chances of ingrown hairs and other skin problems associated with shaving.
As for the five o'clock shadow look, you need to wait until you have an evenly developed beard so you won't look like you have a case of the mange. Once you get whiskers growing over all of your face then you can get yourself a beard trimmer with a short guard and then start doing your part to the keep the 1980s alive with that Don Johnson Miami Vice look.

There is no scientific evidence that as you shave (or cut) hair it will grow thicker.
The thickness and coarseness of hair is directly related to genetics. However, in your case since you seem to be young and just starting to grow facial hair it may take some time for your facial hair to reach the stable point where it has reached its preset genetic thickness and coarseness.
My advise to you is don't rush it. Just let nature take its course and if you are destined to have 'softer' facial hair consider yourself lucky as coarser and thicker facial hair comes with its own problems, e.g., in grown hair, need to shave more than once a day, razor burns, your amorous partner may be getting overly scratched by your facial hair that you will be denied access unless you are always clean shaven, etc.
Good Luck!

Do not believe the "myth" of shaving more to have thicker hair. Your hair will grow at the same rate determined by your genetic composition.
Yes, it is normal for many young men to have "spotty" areas of facial hair when they enter that part of puberty. Your 5 o'clock shadow will only come when your hair grows in more and settles on your adult rate of growth. There is nothing you can do now to enhance it, unless you want to draw it on.
Some men can shave in the morning and have a noticeable shadow by the afternoon. Some men can shave every other day or every few days. Your genes are what determine that growth. In time, you'll have more growth.

I personally agree more with Jean-Jacques Rousseau philosophy. We as humans have the ability to put differences aside and work for the greater good of mankind- that has been proved time and time again. Sadly what also had been proved is that we can also be petty and selfish in our desires, which can and has lead to great evil. Society as a whole is a contributing factor to this behavior- this is a me society. So while Hobbes sentiment is true as well, it is also inherently wrong. By saying humans are evil that is a generalization based on bad people and events. I firmly believe that we can all learn to work together and get along, just sometimes finding that middle ground can be difficult.

Shave as much as possible, the more you shave the more coarse your facial hair will become. It'll take a while to get to the 5 o'clock shadow stage, peach fuzz won't do the trick.

In response to S H, shaving does actually cause thicker hair. This is because when you shave, you are cutting the hair at an uneven angle and as a result will grow back slightly more thicker than it previously was.

well it gets thicker as you shave it off
it grows back as stubble, but to get a 5 0'clock shadow thing, you may need to be shaving for a while, and then stop it needs to be slightly thicker
p.s. you may consider soap or shaving cream for an easier shave
