Harper Lee wrote this one and only book that has become a classic in American literature.

Scout is a tomboy who lives in a single parent family where the only real mother figure is Calpernia, the black housekeeper. Scout has an older brother, Jem, who is quite smart. Their father, Atticus, is a lawyer who is defending a black man on charges of rape on a white woman.

This is a time period where blacks and whites do not get along. Atticus is different. He is trying to do what he believes is right.

A lot of quality literature deals with the concept of how a human being can be a good person. Defending an accused rapist is not a popular stand and Atticus and his children become the target of racist taunts.

The accused, Tom Robinson, is a man who couldn't possibly have raped this white girl. It's an ugly scene because he has a wife and children to support. Only Atticus believes him.

This is a fantastic book. I know that it looks like it's just another small print book but it shows you a generation that is almost forgotten.

There are aspects of the book that Lee modeled on her own life. While she lived with both parents (her dad was a lawyer), her mother was neglectful of her children, especially Harper Lee. The character of Dill, the children's friend, is modeled after Truman Capote. Like Capote, Dill's real father is a mystery. He grows up with an older aunt who looks after him. There is also a famous case called the Scottsboro boys that Lee took as inspiration. These young black men were falsely accused of attacking white women.

I hope that you find enjoyment in the book.

What do you mean? Is there a book called How to.... or do you mean Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mockingbird? The former seems like something to forget about. The latter is an excellent story told from the perspective of a young girl and requires patience to get into it and follow her narration. It is very worthwhile and you will be rewarded for any effort it takes to get the hang of it.

Don't worry, it's a hard book to read and understand. Go to the video store and rent the movie, then read the book.
