I live in an apartment and I had the water pipe to the toilet burst in my bathroom around midnight. Of course it broke BEFORE the shut off valve, so my bathroom was rapidly filling with water.
I put down a dam of towels at the door and called the super.

The supers responded immediately, shut off the water to the whole apartment and called in a plumber to fix it.
Because the pipe was so badly rusted he had to knock a hole in the wall and it seems at some time he cut himself on the wire mesh behind the tiles...

So by 2 am the pipe was fixed, the toilet back together and the large debris picked up...

BUT...

My bathroom floor was covered in bits of tile and small debris, the wet towels had been dumped in the tub, bottom of the tub was covered in grit and rust) and there was blood on the floor, sink and also the tiles.

Am I expecting too much to think that the workman or super should have made an effort to clean up more of the mess?
Or at least the blood?!?

*please note - I'm not bashing plumbers, I was just wondering if this is normal or if the super should have come back and cleaned up in the morning.

It's a very reasonable expectation, but sadly, a lot of trades don't do it very well, if at all. It's the sign of a professional vs. a lazy, inconsiderate worker who is rushing to do the job, get paid and get to the next one.

You should call your superintendent and complain. Since you live in an apt, the plumber is probably a relative of the super, or a friend of a friend who does this work on the side for a cheap price. And you don't have a lot of leverage since you didn't directly hire the plumber. There's not much else you can do, since there are no laws concerning cleanup in most cities.

Learn to live with it. It's not the biggest disaster in the world.

Call the Super, He hired the Plumber, the landlord is the responsible party here since it was his pipe that broke and he is paying the bill. If this work was done after hours at PREMIUM PAY, nobody can afford to pay a craftsman to do the clean-up work. Call your landlord, and stop bashing the contractors. The plumber probably had to be at another job site at 7:00AM, after leaving your apartment at 2:00AM. Show a little compassion for the guy he's trying to feed his family same as you. After all the plumber didn't break your pipe or cause the flood, and after all YOUR NOT PAYING HIM.

OK i am a general plumber/electrician, and I respond to your call for an emergency repair.
I charge £55 per hour. I don't charge if I turn up and can't fix your problem.
I repair the fault as required it takes me 2 hours £110, but, you want me to clean up any mess that has occurred.
This can take another hour £165. If an insurer is paying, you don't care, but if you are paying, be honest would you rather pay £110 or £165 for the call out. Get off your butt and clean up it is cheaper!!!
Lets face it why do people expect workmen to carry out any task without making any mess.
Also have you tried getting someone to fix anything? If they took a long time its because people like you want us to fix the problems and clean up a mess after. Do us all a favor and stop bitching and start cleaning. I have been to houses where I have wanted to puke just because it was filthy, then I get the blame! You cant scramble eggs without breaking hem first!!!

Considering it was at 3am that the service was actually done , you should be thank full for the response you received at that ungodly hour , the small clean up detail unfortunately is your responsibility since it was your place , even though you are renting , there have to be a give and take of equal proportion under the circumstance , you see the money is not always the most important thing , the plumber came to your rescue , it was not an emergency for him , it was yours , you are lucky there was some one with a good heart to come over to fix the problem .

The golden rule of decent contractors is to clean up your mess. Many contractors will (as i have ) fire people who do not clean up. You are not finished until you clean up.
The guy leaving blood behind is unsafe. I would not allow him back in.
If I was you I would complain to both the supper and the contracting company. Thankfully he doesn't represent all tradesmen and women.
That sucks.

You should expect to recieve your apt back in good shape. Call the super and tell him you want it cleaned and you want towels washed.

They're required to do that. If they left blood around, that is a hazardous material and you can contact your local health department to complain. I'd be absolutely furious if I were in your shoes. If you want to move, take pictures of the mess and show them to a lawyer ... he'll make it easy to break a lease for nothing.

I think that any "professional" should clean up after his work. If one doesn't, one is hardly professional. Your mess should have been taken care of & not left to you for the most part. Both the superintendent & plumber should have done their parts in the clean up.
