Skeletal muscle mass is regulated by hormones and cytokines.
Anabolic hormones,GH/IGF-1 and testosterone cause Hypertrophy, on the other hand, Catabolic hormones such as Glucocorticoid and TNF-α reduces skeletal muscle mass.

Physical stimulation induces the expression of these hypertrophic hormones(especially IGF-1), whereas reduces adipose tissue mass which produces catabolic cytokine.

If you want increase your muscle mass, Exercise is the best way.
