It's not. It's the official language of the United States of America and anyone expecting to do business/reside here permanently should expect to speak the language. Americans wouldn't move to another country without learning their native language; immigrants should expect to do the same. A lot of people have pride in their home countries and would like to see their language used more in the United States, but that's an unreasonable expectation. If a person is proud of their country and do not want to learn English, then they should re-consider moving here and consider staying in their home country where their native tongue is used widely.

When my mother immigrated to this country in 1954 from Germany it was her top priority to speak English and she did it in record time. She felt it was her duty to do so. Everyone who immigrated in those years learned English as their primary language. Today, people who immigrate retain their languages, culture, and in some cases their style of dress. It's not right by any standard, but it seems to be the fad for this generation. Hopefully, their children will be assimilated weather they like it or not. I work for Korean people who are senior citizens and members of their family cannot speak English and they have been living here since the 1970's. I also work with some Spanish guys and I am learning Spanish and it is fun at work to compare languages. I am slowly teaching them English and it is going very well. Eventually they will learn English.

It isn't unreasonable. My Puerto Rican husband, his three brothers, and his parents all believe that once on the mainland, you should be expected to learn English.

It isn't. This is America. English is our language. Foreigners want to come here; they should expect to learn the language. If one of us relocated to another country, we would be expected to know that language. We would not be catered to & pampered with things in our language just to make it easier for us. I think that it is very wrong that foreigners (& illegals) are given so much from MY tax dollars, & they get it easier than citizens of this country. I could go on. . .

it definitely is not, and even though i am a liberal opposed to a lot of immigrant restrictions, knowing English needs to be a requirement. All of the immigrants before this wave of Mexican immigrants all assimilated and learned English, but now all of the illegals are wanting to keep their language and not assimilate. I am all for immigration, but you have to be prepared o take the steps necessary to becoming a citizen.

You want to live here, adopt our ways and learn the language. The language here happens to be English. You don't like it, then GET OUT.

my family came here from sweeden and germany,
why don't I have the right to expect the DMV and the courthouse and stores to have paperwork, clerks and menus in my native language.
I feel very discriminited against, other minorities get thier language respected but I can't get mine.
