nod32 is simplest and best and most powerful, but you have to pay for it.

AVG is probably best if you don't want to pay anything. .

it is excellent and basically very little trouble to use. . it's very low-maintenance

AVG is free because they want to convince everyone that it's a great product, ESPECIALLY those people who work in IT departments and get it free at home. . so they can go to work and tell the boss how good it is. .

by the way. . AdAware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy are not antivirus programs, but anti-spyware programs (they are very good, but they aren't enough. . you need a good (and constantly updated) antivirus, and you need to go to Microsoft's website to get the latest Windows updates so you'll be secure

and you need a good firewall, too, like Zonealarm (free from http://www.zonelabs.com)

If you aren't going to put in a third party firewall, then at least make sure you have the Windows firewall on (that comes in XP as part of Service Pack 2). .

Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall, and make sure it's set to "On"

by the way, any disk that came with the computer only has a free 60 day (or whatever period) trial that comes with it. .

it isn't any good after that 60 days (not for antivirus, that is)

A Good antivirus Is AVG Antivirus . I like this antivirus because it does not slow your system down and its free as well. It updates almost everyday and has a powerful scanner. I would highly recommend AVG for an antivirus program.

As for an antispyware program , there are quite a few good ones out there. The most popular is lavasofts adware se personal. Anothor good antispyware is spybot search and destroy. These are just some of the many good antispyware programs out there.

Always remember to update before you scan . And more importantly than an antispyware and an antivirus is the windows update. As this keeps all your computer up to date including the security updates from Microsoft . You can find the windows update from the following link:

AdAware from lavasoft.com is a great spyware detector and remover program that is easy to use and is totally free. Also try Yahoo toolbar with Norton Anti-spyware, also free and easy to use. For free virus and anti-spy rolled into one, go to trendmicro.com and run their free scanner and remover. All very easy to use.

Good luck!

On the Yahoo toolbar you can get Norton anti spy for free. You might check your Internet provider to see if they offer any free downloads of Internet security. Mine does.
