Jane: See my answers to your double negative questions.

Lots of grammar snobs here. What is Standard English? Standard English in England, Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Hong Kong?

Or perhaps Standard English by occupation: doctor's, lawyer's, the military's Standard English? How about the Queen's Standard English?

There are rules to the English Language, but not a great number, and they certainly are not set in concrete. That's why English is such a wonderfully flexible language. That's why English has the largest vocabulary of any language, and is adding new words every day. It's also why some non-English speakers have such difficulty learning the language.

Should be there a standard language?????

English is extremely important but, unfortunately, standards in the teaching of it has dropped immensely over the last 30 or so years. I do not blame the teachers for this because they all teach according to government guidelines and curriculum.

The classics by writers as eminently qualified as Dickens, Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, Hardy, etc, should be standard works in class and other renowned authors should be encouraged for home reading.

Schools that relax their standards on handwriting and spelling do not bode well for the future of the country!

There is a standard language! Shame that a lot of the people that are becoming teachers now weren't taught grammar properly when they were at school, and therefore struggle to get their own heads round it, never mind passing it on to the youngsters.

This apart, the standard of teaching in general appears to be a hell of a lot better, just with some fundamental details lacking.

Pretty much essential, I reckon. Some of the teachers will have to learn it first. Might see a drop in frustration ,anger and maybe even violence if spoken communication were much clearer.
