I think it's due to a lot of money changing hands between councils and developers. No,everyone is not cured(far from it) they are just being put on endless prescriptions for tablets until a happy medium is found which can take a very long time, the only people who are kept in Hospital are the criminally insane and the seriously disturbed.

In my state ( NH) the state hospital is being closed down because the area hospitals have locked Mental wards. The state prison now has it own mental hospital. The state still takes those who are to ill to be in public. In NH before you can be released from the mental hospital you need a place to stay& a income( SSI . Welfare). They use to just throw them on the street but no more.

No but there are more madder people on the outside....I shouldn't joke because it is a serious issue, the mentally ill should be looked after and if they are dangerous mentally then society has a right to be protected against them. Answer to your question has to be financial gain to the government or local council...now that really is INSANE.

Actually more hospitals are specializing in specific illnesses. With advancements in new drug therapy's we don't need whole hospitals for most mental illnesses. Also the need for safer buildings is an issue . Its cheaper, easier, and faster to build new buildings in most cases.

You have Ronald Reagan, and other Republicans to thank for that. He closed the mental hospitals, and put the patients in the street. Now, it costs a hell of a lot more to care, and house them in prisons. Thanks a lot Reagan.
