A "platinum" album is an album that has sold 1,000,000 copies. a "twice platinum" would be 2,000,000, e.tc. up to nine million copies. an album achieves "diamond" status at 10,000,000 copies sold.

These stats are for the USA, which has the highest requirements to achieve any status, and other countries thresholds can be viewed on my source. The USA's silver, gold, platinum and diamond albums are certified by the RIAA. Only legal downloads are counted in determining an albums status.
