Things to consider.

1) do you need a keyboard with it? Will you do a lot of data input (email, IM, notes) or will mostly read/consume data?

2) Do you want to synchronize it with your PC? Do you need mac support? Does the PDA support your PC email/calendar/contact application? Can you sync it with your online calendar?

3) Are you going to consume a lot of data? Look for a device with Wi-FI if you plan to use a lot of data. Look for a device w/ high speed capabilities byong GPRS.

4) Baterry life -- what's the talk time, standby time, PDA usage time that you get -- ussually it will be very poor compared to a regular phone, but this will vary depending on the device you choose.

5) Music/Videos -- to you plan to use it to listen to your music and videos - look for a device that supports your music format (MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, IPOD AAC)

6) Do you want to use Word/Excel/Powerpoint/PDF files on your PDA? Make sure that your device comes w/ a built in application for these file formats (or any other file format that you want to use).

7) Do you have an existing email account that you want to use on this device? Make sure that your email provider is compatible with the PDA you are looking to purchase.

8) Storage - how much "disk" space is available for your use? Can you add more memory (via a SD card maybe)?

9) Bluetooth -- make sure that it has bluettoth capability to make it easier to deal w/ the bulk intrinsic of every PDA phone.

Personally, I see the blackberry more as a business tool than a personal PDA device. All things considered, I would look to get a Windows Mobile device (either the Treo 700W, or the t-mobile Dash). The Q is actually a great device, but it only runs on the verizon network -- which means that it won't work world wide (maybe not an important point for you).

Take a look at a Treo 700 W, a T-Mobile Dash, a Verizon Motorola Q, and a Cingular Nokia E62 -- they are all great devices. (If you like blackberries, then consider the T-Mobile Blackberry Pearl)

Enjoy

The HP ipaq is an amazing gizmo although a bit costly. It is the quintessential business tool, you can edit word, excel files, etc and it has great email service along with a lot of other goodies (windows player, etc). The cost is worth it.

Treo and Blackberry are the best. The Q is terrible, according to my mom who has one.
