Parents have a lot of questions when it comes to sleep and their baby. The first and most important: How much sleep does my baby need?

Newborn 16 to 20 hours per day
3 weeks 16 to 18 hours per day
6 weeks 15 to 16 hours per day
4 months 9 to 12 hours plus two naps (2 to 3 hours each)
6 months 11 hours plus two naps (1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours each)
9 months 11 to 12 hours plus two naps (1 to 2 hours each)
1 year 10 to 11 hours plus two naps (1 to 2 hours each)

The amount of sleep needed varies individually with the baby and with the age and circumstances. Some babies are long sleepers and some are catnappers. Some are very regular and others are very irregular.

Your newborn baby doesn't know the difference between night and day. He needs to sleep and feed around the clock to grow and develop correctly, so night and day don't matter much to him anyway. In general, your newborn will sleep about 16 to 18 hours out of every 24. A newborn usually sleeps two to four hours at a time and wakes up hungry. He needs to eat around the clock at first but will gradually sleep more at night and less during the day.

You can begin to teach your baby the difference between night and day by behaving differently at different times. During the day, talk to your baby more while you feed him. Keep it light and bright. At night, be more subdued and quiet. Keep the lighting down. Eventually, he'll catch on and begin to sleep more at nighttime.

Good luck and congratulations!

yes, and remember with newborns there is a wide range of "normal" . Like all people, every baby is different. Some babies sleep up to 21 hours and some only sleep 9...and keep in mind that when they are feeding, they aren't sleeping, even though it might seem like it. So if your baby is eating every 2-4 hours like most babies, and feeding for a half hour.. that's 3-6 hours that the baby is considered "awake"! If you include the 10 minutes here and there that the baby is awake and not eating..you have a baby who sleeps 18-20 hours. And remember...after 1 week, the baby is still in the sleepy stage, after a month he/she will be more alert. Congratulations to you...I have a 5 month old girl and 5 and 3 year old boys..and it is such a joy. You have such great things to look forward to with your older child having a sibling to love.

My daughter at 7 weeks went through periods were she would sleep all afternoon. However, it was the same time like 12 until 7 in the evening, with bottles every three hours. She would wake up when I changed or fed her, so if he is not waking up during those times I would be concerned. Also, a temp of 95.7 is a slight fever. You have to take him to the doctor is ER if a rectal temp of 101.4 is detected. I also can't give him tylenol until he is 2 months old, so put him in some light clothes, or give him a tepid bath. He might just have a cold, but it would really ease your mind to talk to a nurse. I have called the nurse for far less reasons than this, and they never think a question is ignorant.

This is normal. Consider yourself lucky that your baby doesn't have colic or something! It is really good for the baby to sleep a lot. Most newborns sleep about 20 hours a day!

Thats about right all new babys do Is eat, sleep and poo. You better enjoy the quiet days because when they start crawling and pulling up on things you'll wish for a 1 month old baby again.

You have an angel baby! Enjoy it. My daughter was like that until she turned one and now won't sleep but 10 hours a day! Just enjoy! I'd rather have a baby like that than one that is awake and crying all the time!

It is perfectly normal for your baby to sleep this much...You'll start to see a little more interaction and alertness in the next week or two. The one thing I don't know is if you are nursing or not. If you are, watch what you eat because what you put in you, you put in your baby. ie: pain medicine, ect. Certain things can make baby sleepy.
Think of it this way...when your baby sleeps, he is growing!
I think you have a wonderful, content, healthy baby.

You have a GREAT baby and they are hard to get. It's like you have to special order them.lol. Enjoy it and get as much rest as he does.My daughter was like that and I could take her to get my hair done, my nails done and every time she would surprise the hell out of the ladies in the stores cause none of them had ever seen a baby that slept so good and never cried or made a fuss when awake.God truly blessed me and it sounds as he has you too.
