Expensive clothes. They wear what normal people wear, but they can afford the best of the best. They have not only their suits handmade, but even their shirts handmade. Likely their shoes also.
You might mean what do kings wear for state ceremonies. That would depend on the country they are kings of. But in Europe, it is mostly fur-trimmed capes and silk ribbons and other do-dads, and crowns.

For what?
For a coronation, each Duke/Duchess' crown must contain 8 lbs of gold, their robes are trimmed with ermine and lots of other nonsense that represent bygone days.
Lords and ladies have to have their tiara/etc make to look like certain leaves, containing at least a base amount of pure silver.
There are old (old) books that deal with the intricacies of these events, and also the older Jewelers in London do take care of these items. Here are some pictures of the crowns to be worn at the next coronation.

These are the things that the people attending the King/Queens coronation must wear if available and so think of the weight on their heads! Its a miracle they can make it through the ceremony. If you asking can the Queen dress herself in any fashion she chooses, the answer is yes, she just chooses to be dowdy to keep down criticism and she has everything she has ever worn, labeled to where she wore it and when, that way she will not make the mistake of wearing it to the same event 2x.

Probably the usual clothes, including a business suit OR an uniform of one of the Armed Services. For Opening of Parliament and perhaps a few other occasions, wearing of Robes of State and the Imperial State Crown. For Coronation, wearing, briefly, St. Edward's Crown. I suppose the usual clothes for things like Royal Ascot; and for some events in Scotland quite likely a Kilt and appropriate Jacket, etc.
For vacation, family events, etc., perhaps a cardigan or other appropriate sweater instead of a suit coat.
At least that would seem probable for the UK; other countries could be quite different ... such as Siam years ago!!!

Suits, tuxedos.
For casual, everyday wear: probably button up shirts or polos.
