My mother took a beauty and health class many years ago and they said to put cucumbers on the eyes to help remove the dark rings under the eyes, dont know why. Also instead of rubbing your eyes, rub your palms together until the friction causes heat and then place the palms on the closed eyelids and let the heat sooth them without rubbing.

There is an enzyme in cucumbers that actually shrink pores and smooths the skin without being an irritant to the eyes.
