How does lining up for a new system release work?

Question

I know someone who just stood in line for 3 days for a PS3. But how does it work? Surely the stores are open during this time and everything.

I'm going after a Wii

I'm not quite sure myself how it works but my dad went for the gamecube at launch and i'm going at a midnight release on saturday for the wii and i think im going a few hours before it opens because waiting 3 days is too much. There are plenty of Wii's for everyone.
