I cannot think of one reason why you could not. Just make sure that you have enough space for the long vines. Just don't forget the weight of the melons when placing you vines. (don't think you will want them vining up string or rope.)

Sure, I saw some melons growing hydroponically at Disney World, not cantelopes but showed they could grow. Zuchinni also thrived well there growing in pipes.

I think you can pretty much grow anything hydroponically. Do a search.
