Indie in music is such bands as, Razorlight, the killers, new found glory, that sorta thing =] no idea bout film tho. Indie is a type of genre.
One of the most common and widely recognized definitions of "indie" is the description of not being connected with a major recording label (currently one of the "Big Four" recording companies: Warner, Universal, Sony BMG and EMI). This is the definition used by NME's indie music charts in the UK, among others.
Many artists choose to release their music on independent labels, as they're generally able to retain more creative freedom and control than is usually allowed by major labels to the artists they sign. Independent labels still mainly provide support in the business aspects of music, similar to the way a major label might, though on a much smaller and less demanding scale. The downside of independent labels, is the fact they often lack the finances to compete with corporate labels in terms of promotion and initial financial support a major might provide an artist with. It means not major label

A movie made by an independent filmmaker is an "Indie." They're not big Hollywood productions with multi-million dollar sponsors, but some tend to make a lot of money at the box office anyway. A good example of an Indie film would be The Blair Witch Project.

Indie - means independent obviously
It can be two things. Relating to funding or to style. Funding indie films means that the film was made through a production studio that is not attached to a major. (Paramount, Disney etc.) Sometimes, major studios have a distribution arms that specifically seeks out indie films for distribution (like Warner Independent or Sony Picture Classics). Indie production companies start of small through private money and build up on their successes. The same goes for music just substitute Production Company for label, one not associated with a major studio like Warner. Indie labels include (Merge, Kill Rock Stars), these are the famous ones but there are tones. Again, major studios can distribute them. You will hear people say that a "band" has sold out when they sign to a major label. They are usually forced to change their sound a bit, make it more pop.
In terms of style for films, Indie tends to deal with subjects not discussed in the mainstream. Since (in my opinion) major have not guts they will not take a chance on interesting films. So they are made independently are if it is a splash at a festival they will sign a deal. But, they sometimes deal with domestic issues, relationships and take up filmmaking styles that are not used in Hollywood. They use ideas from avant-garde (exponential cinema) and new wave. The introspective nature in indie films is mainly due to the fact that it is cheaper use the ideas of the medium such as (extreme close ups, jump cuts) to express an idea when you do not have the money for extravagant art design to get your idea across. Music is the same way. While it can mean really anything not on a major label, it usually refers to a type of rock/pop music that does not have an obvious pop melody. Instead they opt for esoteric and highly introspective lyrics, (low-fi) a sub genre of indie rock likes to play with guitar fuzz. Indie music also takes allot from older music folk, jazz and combine these with new rock styles. Real indie is not accepted by the mainstream because it can sometimes be really intellectual or the melodies can be complex. see. Pavement definitive indie band of the 90s. Think Hal Hartley (director) for films. Sorry for the long answer.

Bad music can be something which contain: dirty and offensive lyrics and images/video (something which challenges god and/or promotes obscenity and drugs) Excessive use of disapproved instruments Sadly today we hardly find a music video which does not contain the above.. Experiments carried out by doctors and professors have confirmed that the music of today is such that it does not only affect the brain, but each and every organ of one`s body. There is a close relationship between music and bodily movements. We find that people listening to music automatically start tapping their fingers and feet, as if the music is permeating in their blood. It is also proved that music affect`s one`s emotions, increases arousal in terms of alertness and excitement and also leads to various physiological changes in the person. In a psychology experiment, it was found that listening to moderate type of music increased one`s normal heart beat, whilst listening to rock music the heart beat increased even further, yet people claim that music has no effect. It is a very ignorant and misguided attitude to percieve music as a form of pleasure and passing of time, since the messages of today`s music follow a general theme of love, fornication, drugs and freedom. We find that the whole world is obsessed with the kufr idea of freedom, i.e. freedom of speech, freedom of movement, etc. In modern schools and universities, we observe independence, free expression and secular thinking being encouraged. This idea of freedom, “ It`s my life, I`ll do what I want” is a predominant, underlying theme of today`s music. It is being used as a means for drilling those modern ideologies that are totally contrary to the religious values, into the minds of the people. One should abstain from evil audacities such as listening to music and encourage others to do the same too. you could use that time to do more "useful" stuff..

I'm pretty certain it means 'independent'. Usually Indie artists are ones that haven't signed up with a record label.

Independant. It means they are not funded by a major studio (film) or recording label (music).

when a major/familiar company won't finance or promote a film by an unknown actor or director etc., the newcomer goes independent... such as sundance picking up the film.
