I personally don't get why companies say that like they're expecting people to compromise their lives and sit around their phone or computer twidling their thumbs to wait around for one opportunity.

Now before any of you get all snarky on me, I respect the fact people don't want to be badgered by a million questions, but if you're too busy to answer a basic question, why the hell even post a position?

When a company receives a lot of phone calls, there are many issues that can arise. First, it ties up phone lines with potential employees, which means productivity goes down from the normal routine as many hours can be taken away answering phone calls, even just short calls. Second, misinformation from the person answering the phone can occur to the potential employee that can cause later problems and confusion. Only HR reps should be speaking to job seekers. Third, the employers who suggest this are trying to keep the phone lines open to customers and clients. And finally, respect their wishes, if they only want to review online resumes before conducting face to face interviews, realize it's nothing to string you along, it's the only way to weed out and not waste time in the process.

I've done it. The reason being that I can briefly check the person out.I'll ask them a couple of quick questions and see how they handle themselves. Some people you can tell right away won't suit the position. This way you don't have to interview everybody.I would guess that about 30% of people that apply for a position have little or no experience and/or proper business ethics related to the job.

Basically because people calling all day about a position would tie up the phone and no business could get done.

personally i think it's pretty dang annoying since every resume writing or interviewing class you take will tell you to make follow up phone calls on the jobs you want, and these days, they are making that less and less possible, which means, harder and harder to show your enthusiasm for a job you want. i don't think they're trying to string people along; i think they are just lazy and don't want to answer phone calls and live up to their end of the hiring process bargain.

because if you are interested in the position...you will want to do more than just call...i.e. send out your resume, visit the business...

i think its a "weeding out" if you will...

besides...if there are 500 people with the same question about a position...the receptionist would be AWFUL busy
