My first thought is that the Import DVDs may not play in US/Canada DVD players (Region 1), as they were made for other countries.

that all depends, what kind of anime are you into? there are tons of anime that you can buy. i recomend going to your local best buy to buy them, cause they are always cheeper there. suncoast is usually a little more expensive.
some of the animes i enjoy are
chobits
inuyasha
one piece
samurai champloo
appleseed
fruits basket
love hina
cowboy bebop
and there are many others that i just cant think of right at the moment.
