Abortion is a very broad and controversial topic.
Think about topics that are really and truly of interest to you. "Be original" really just means to think for yourself, and to be adventurous. You have control of the reigns.
You may be in over your head with the abortion topic unless you have a firm conviction about it, and are confident that you can argue well for it. Also, you want to present the best version of yourself to the college: remember, you're applying to get in. And talking about abortion may not be your ticket.
Since it's an application-paper, maybe you should write a paper inquiring into the best way to live (this is too broad - you'd have to narrow down your focus, but something along these lines might work). You might narrow it down by arguing that your philosophy of life--and, the best way to live and be successful--is to maintain balance: equal amounts of work, study, play, family etc.
This was just an example--but, be adventurous. If I were you, I'd get into a quiet corner, and jot down all the things that are important to me, and that I'd be excited enough to write about.
Again, if you're really passionate about writing about abortion, then go for it.

I agree with the others and your Mom. Abortion is a very controversial subject and the division is about 50 per cent on either side, and so the odds are pretty good that anyone that reviews your essay will not agree with you. Also, there is a lot of emotion attached with abortion because it is a moral issue, and so even though you can present an intelligent thoughtful argument it may be hard to get through other people's biases.
How about writing about the inequities of the economic system in the United States?
Or what field are you planning to study in? Maybe you can write on a topic related to that field.

Great topic...but remember to be original. Do not fall into say what people say all the time. Find an interesting angle..perhaps the angle of finance. what are pros and cons of abortion on a personal budget, social budget, and US budget maybe. That is just an example...use it or find your own.
If you want a great topic do something that shakes people up. I ma sure your mom wants the best and would like you to play it safe. But when it comes to good writing, do not be afraid to take a chance. Do not drop the topic just because you are afraid to offend someone. Someone is always offended by something these days..best of luck

I would not personally pick that topic. It's too controversial and someone on the opposite side of the issue from you may not think you argue your side well (even if you do). It's also a very over-done topic for papers.
Pick something that is not controversial, but insightful. Something almost like a Pageant question. But don't give a short pageant answer, but a well thought-out, insightful answer.
At least that's what I would do.

No you may't. for 2 causes: a million) you gained't have had a similar reviews to her so what she has written is irrelevant on your life 2) colleges verify for plagiarism. when you're stuck copying some different person's artwork they'll reject your software on the prompt. it is not uncommon for persons to be stuck like this so it is not well worth taking the chance. surely use her essay for recommendations and a competent handbook to stay with even though it is going to not be the very same. when you're having project possibly you may ask her to provide you some assistance.

Your Mom is correct. The last thing you want to do is offend anybody on the selection committee. No matter what your stance, you will offend someone with that question.
You could possibly explore Hunger in America and how to fix the problem. Anorexia and the connection between hollywood, the modeling industry and young girls body image.
