Rin Tin Tin, Lassie,(who was suppose to be a female, and has female name), the original Benji, Eddie (from TV's "Frasier"),and the dog that played in those Air Bud Movies were all male. The TV and movie industry usually just look for an animal with the most talent, they figure that the majority of the population aren't going to be scrutinizing the genitalia of the animals. And although males are generally easier to train, they often like to do a little territorial marking and males sometimes like to "hump" on people or things.

Back in the 70's and earlier Both male and female dogs were used in TV shows and movies. The dogs were generally show quality and intact. Nowadays with the changeing political climate and the nueter nazi's winning the propaganda war the dogs you see on TV nowadays are generally spayed females or nuetered males. Rarely will you see intact animals. The reason is to avoid any possibility of possibly noticeing sexual traits. This has been taken very far. There was a calander of horses and dogs and each one if it was inact had the genitals photoshopped out. i.e. no penises or testicles or vulva's shown at all and animals are also posed with a leg in the way of any possibility of seeing genitals. Useing spayed or nuetered animals reduces the need to edit out genitals because theirs are generally atrophied and thus wont be an issue. ALso the issue of the overblown negative traits of intact animals was never an issue in the past it is only so today because of the political climate. Rin Tin Tin, Lassie being fully intact were just fine behaviorly.

WOW!! Everyone is pretty harsh on here!! The guy was asking for suggestions NOT TO BE JUDGED for what he was doing!! I have a 6 mouth old female, that I tried to make an appt. to have fixed and they were to busy to get her in!!! FOR A MONTH (switch is a little early for her age to come into heat) !! and she came into heat - IS THAT MY FAULT?! I think not - I have total of 4 dogs (2 of which are spayed or neutered, and going to take her in also - so AM BEING RESPONSIBLE, YES) and grew up on a farm so know a fair amount the breeding process- BUT ALSO HAVE NEVER HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS TYPE OF SITUATION - unfortunately have a male, registered male NOT fixed dog at home that is also GOING NUTS! Thought would look for some help / suggestions to help them through this process and came across the article - YEAKS! You folks are nasty! Feel bad for the guy who was just doing the same and got this kind of response! Shame on you all - Think I'll just call the vet, and save myself all this nastiness!

Females in general seem to be more docile (except when protecting their offspring). Females are most likely to maintain an "even keel" and not forget their training or the task at hand, even when there is potential for chaos, noise, stress and or distraction. Any of these can occur on a TV or Movie Set.

Are you sure that Vincent is played by a female dog? How closely are you checking out that puppy?

Lassie, in the original series was supposed to be female. The role was played by a male.

You're not weird, just observant. I believe it's a taboo, like Barbara Eden wasn't allowed to show her navel, Elvis was only shown above the waist, and married couples had twin beds or one always had to keep a foot on the floor. They don't want to show anything dangling.

I'm not exactly sure, but wonder if it's so they won't show a penis on TV? Who knows. The marking answer makes sense, tho, too.
