I am a teacher at the secondary level, and personally I think the homework is horrible. It is not only difficult, but the amount is crazy! I have a daughter in 5th grade and she was assigned to do a 4 page written report on the nervous system. She also had to make a model and then present how it works to the class. All of this in addition to her daily homework. I was so mad, I did the report for her myself. This is all you No Child Left Behind at work. The education system is so screwed up it is beyond repair.

It is totally out of control these days! The school districts are trying all sorts of different programs, and if their not careful, their going to lose a whole of kids on the way. What about the kids who's parents both work, and do not have time to help them with home work? Better yet, the kids in a one parent household? The school district feel if they start the children on harder school work earlier in age, the children won't have a chance to become "AFRAID" of it! For example algebra in 9-10th grade, now it's introduces in 6-7th grade. It's all about passing the Wassel. They start testing in the 6th grade! We love our children, we don't want to see them hanging in the back of the class like a kid with no parents!!

they aren't getting any harder. It's the kids, since kids nowadays don't want to learn just have fun, without thinking about the results and consequences of not learning. Also, it seems they get dumber, they are in a way (indirectly) because they are not learning or are being distracted by other kids who misbehave.

I don't "think" homework is getting harder, I KNOW it is. I have two adult children and one in grade school. And I have witnessed an extreme difference in the amount of homework my youngest has had (since first grade) compared to my oldest two. Homework wasn't even an issue with them.

I believe that excessive homework is actually designed to keep parents, who make up a large portion of the voting populace, so busy and exhausted that they won't have time to think about anything else. Thus, they won't have time to realize how bad the economy is, etc. Much less who's responsible for it. And they certainly won't have time to have much a social life, where they might have the opportunity to talk with others about anything of importance.

Excessive homework also, ostensibly, keeps kids so busy that they won't have time to run the streets and cause trouble for themselves and others. Unfortunately, most of the kids who run the streets and cause trouble, couldn't care less about their homework, to begin with. And all excessive homework does for all the other kids is burn them out on education before they even finish high school. If something's not done to arrest the escalating amounts of homework being heaped on America's students, it will eventually lead to massive amounts of homeschooling. If public schools wish to survive, they will have to do something to turn this situation around, even if they're not offered governmental support (i.e. financial incentive) for doing so. And yes, I realize that schools are already under funded, and teachers are grossly under paid.

Of course, I haven't even begun to address the fact that excessive homework is also designed to keep the children of the middleclass (where two parents have to work) and of the poor (especially minority children) from ever making a success of their lives. Excessive homework does not make children smarter, and it will not bring our children up to par with Europeans and Asians, who surpass them in all subjects. Excessive homework keeps teachers so busy dealing with grading it, and worrying over who has done theirs and who hasn't, that they don't have time to actually teach our children anything of value. Excessive homework is designed to deliberately lower our children's academic performance, so that only the offspring of the top 25% (in economic affluence) have a chance at succeeding. Afterall, the top 25% have the means for tutoring and private schools (where they are not given excessive homework.) I truly believe that excessive homework is one of the most pernicious threats to the survival of our nation. That, and teaching 'for the test', which is a whole other can of worms. . . Just ask almost any teacher.

Yes it is. I do think that homework is good as it teaches responsability aims and goals.......... Lets hope that it stays at the same rate and children still have some days when they don't have any.

Yes, I think it is, especially in the earlier grades. It probably has something to do with the current emphasis on testing and standards.

Yes, I'm a teacher (secondary) but I don't think they should have homework in primary school.
