Wow---just 2?

Female I'm gonna have to say Holly Near...even though some lesbians hate her for being bisexual. Her courage, her music, her stunning clear conscience all make this a better world.

Male I think it has to be one of the unnamed drag queens at the Stonewall Inn that fated night when the queens had finally had enough harassment and refused to be abused any more. Anyone who can fight off rogue cops while wearing heels gets my respect. Braver than I'll ever be. God bless them whoever they are.

Ellen Degeneres, Elton John, and Tom Robinson. Ellen because she is *the* lesbian that everyone knows, and a very charming lady. I just don't think she's off-putting to anyone the way some other people like Rosie can be. Elton simply because he epitomizes gay for most people, in both senses (the gay stereotype of fabulousness and costumery, and his sexuality). I really don't like the man all that much (he's a bit outspoken), but I can't think of anyone better at the moment. The two main gay sites that I know of are called afterellen.com and afterelton.com, respectively.

And you didn't specify, but I want to throw Tom Robinson out there as a bisexual icon, because there are so few. Him, or Alan Cumming, who I completely respect as both an actor and for being simultaneously open but private about his sexuality.

Melissa Etheridge...she is the very definition of what it means to be a noble human being (Her song about Mathew Shepard, Scarecrow, should be our anthem)

Matthew Shepard...not because he is a martyr, or the way he died, but because in his death it reawakened us to the dangers out there and that it was time to take a stand.
