The reason that you ask this question is that you want to know how to do it "in your head." Here's how: First, take the 40 times 100, that's 4000. Then take the 40 times 20, 800. Then take 40 times 3, 120. 4000 + 800 + 120 = 4920

Use a calculator. If that is not allowed, and if you really don't know how to do this multiplication, try it this way.

100 times 40=4000
20 times 40= 800
3 times 40= 120

add and get 4920
