I know only a few basics from the show such as he was falsely branded as a coward from the Army. Why did he carry the broken sword? And did the show center around a plot of him trying to clear his name? Any details would be appreciated - Thanks in advance.

the sword he carried was his own that was broken by his commander when he was thrown out of the army...the shows's plots concerned the character helping other people while trying to come to grips with his dishonorable discharge...connors was agood here...but was way better in "the rifleman"...

Well, trying to clear his name was the whole premise of the show. Like the theme song says "He was innocent (trumpet in distance, dum-da-dum-dum-dum), Not a charge was true (dum-da-dum-da-dum), But the world will never know."
I wasn't very old when the show was on, so I don't recall how he survived the massacre at Bitter Creek. As for the broken sword, that was a sign of being drummed out of the Army. In the opening of each show, before the credits, they show Jason McCord (Connors' character) standing before ranks of soldiers, and an officer rips the stripes off his coat, then he takes the sword and breaks it across his knee. (Which begs the question--if the sword will break across someone's knee, how good a sword is it?) It was an OK show...didn't run all that long...but it did have a cool theme song.

The actor that broke The Connors character sword at the beginning of each program was William Conrad. The real kicker to the show was that the Connors character was under cover nd working with the army, but no one knew.
