I am currently going to be let go of at the end of the year. I have been told in advance and yada yada. However, I am trying to make the best out of a bad situation, they will not give me any work and I have asked for it and I sit here all day doing absolutley nothing. It isn't like I have not put forth the effort but i feel like they are truly pushing me to leave earlier (quite). I can not due to my financial situation. So, knowing I have nothing to do all day I asked if I could just go home early. And they said No, what should or what can I do. I am forced to sit here 8 1/2 hours a day doing absolutely nothing. They won't fire me; and they expect me to take time off during work hours to look for a job...Uhhh hello I can't afford to take the time off cause we don't get paid.!

We only get paid for our sick days and vacation in December and July. So I do not have any time to use to take off and I am not allowed to use there computer nor am I allowed to read at my desk.

Are you able to use the time at work to look for another job, for instance, making phone calls, reading the newspaper want-ads, browsing online? I agree that it's a poor use of your time. It sounds like they aren't very concerned about their employees, and in a way, it's good that you will not be able to work for them any longer.

Other things you could do are perhaps a hobby, if you have one you can bring to work, or read a book, or write some letters to friends (how 19th-century, I know).

Okay...are you looking for a job? Seriously though...what is their reasoning behind this? Have you talked to the human resources people to find out what the heck's going on? Why are they keeping you until the end of the year rather than paying you severence to leave now since they are having you do nothing? I know, I know...more questions than answers but that sounds like a really screwy situation!

Unfortunilty it is something that your company can do. I would suggest doing some Christmas shopping or something on line. The other thing you will want to do, is use all your sick time. When you leave a company (on your own or laid off) a company doesn't have to pay you for what you have left over.

Sorry there is no good answer for your situation.
