Sony is losing money on their PC ps3. Sony PS3 should have made retail price PS3 for $800.00. Its a high end PC console machine. If you look at the model spec's. It has a 4.2ghz cell, high end graphic chip, and HD DVD player. Its a bargain price at $600 dollar. If consumer said its too whopping expensive, then how come its sold out? Sony cant fade American buyers!!! We laugh at Sony price. Every kid can afford your PS3.

On the first day of sale, why would you sell 20 inventory PS3 for each store? Thats dumb marketing.

If you think that Sony is stupid for selling it so cheap then you obviously have no common-sense at all. In the entire history of video game systems, I don't think any company has ever sold the system for as much as it costs them to make. The same thing happened with ps2, xbox, xbox360 and now ps3, they sell their systems for much less then it costs to make them because all the money they make is in the games, think about it. A game probably costs 1 cent each to make cause they are just stamping images onto blank discs which is an extremely inexpensive process. If they sold the units for as much as it costs to make them they would sell far less units and those who did still by the units wouldnt have any money leftover to spend on games which is the companies most profitable thing.

"Eventually at least 80% of all ps2 owners will upgrade to the ps3" That's a huge *huge* assumption with no facts to back it up. As to the question at hand, it was definitely a big gamble, but not an unprecidented one. The PS2 and XBox were sold at a loss their entire lives. The 360 was for a while (and due to the drop in the value of the dollar probably is again). The PS1 might have been as well. Heck, Microsoft (as what they saw as the price of breaking into the console business) lost $4 billion over it's life, and that includes the money MS made on games. They make their money back on games, specifically by charging a licencing fee (think it's around $7 per copy) on every copy of every game for their system that gets sold (at least in the US, which such licencing is required to sell your game). It has nothing to do with putting the consumer first. It's all about grabbing market share at virtually any cost.

think about what your saying.....the PS3 will only only sell if people can afford it...the $500-$600 price tag is very expensive for some...if people can afford the console at its current cost, and knowing the hype surrounding the PS3, then Sony will still make billions. And after all, no matter what you do in this industry, you will lose some money

After the initial craze dies down most people arn't so willing to shell out that much to just play games and if you get really into in use the web browser and media features. Fact is it is not a computer it's a gaming machine. And not everyone can afford one in this world.

Wow.
They always lose money on consoles.
They make it up on the games.
And seeing as how they're the 73rd wealthiest entity in the world(right after the country of Venezuela) I'd say they're doing pretty well.

BTW....I saw one resell on Ebay this morning for $15,100!

It's sad that this much time has been wasted on something so trivial. It's especially sad that we had a virtual riot on our hands in CA yesterday over this stupid thing. We're doing a great job of perpetuating the "ignorant American" image.

Get over it, people. It's a friggin game!
