I have high-speed cable internet, and used to have high-speed phone internet. In both cases, I could shut off my computer and all the others would keep working. This is because I am using a router that offers a 4-port switch on it with built-in firewall protection.
The Linksys routers and D-Link routers you buy at CompUSA or Best Buy for about $50 that have the 802.11b or 802.11g wireless feature can be hooked up so that you have a setup as follows:
1) Internet feed to the DSL or cable modem
2) DSL or cable modem to the router
3) Any WIRED PCs plug into ports on the router
4) Any WIRELESS PCs and laptops link up to the SID on the router.
In that setup, if you turn off the router, ALL the PCs will be unable to reach the Internet.
The only time you cannot shut down a PC on this type of home network is if your PC were set up as the Server PC, and it was running the software. For example, they may have installed a network copy of Microsoft Office and do not have a copy of that on their own PCs.
You may want to review with your parents that the network they set up is done correctly or if there is perhaps another reason why they don't want your PC turned off.
And if all that is bothering you is the green light on the PC, a little piece of black electricians tape will hide that quite well for you.

there are a few options here...
1) If you have wireless highspeed then you must all ready have a wireless router. Get a cheap wireless pci card for your PC, then your PC no longer needs the wires and the router would then become your Internet gateway.
2) for about $40 more your dad can get a wireless/wired router that has both the wire connections and wireless, the router then becomes the Internet gateway (more expensive models include a firewall)
Sounds to me like your dad is using your PC as a server/Internet gateway. For a network with only 3 pc's this is really unnecessary, he should just use the router as the DHCP server for all 3 pc's this way anyone can turn off their pc without effecting someone else's Internet connection.

Yes if you place the computer on stand-by, it will cut-off everyones internet.
Instead of making your computer the gateway for everyone elses internet, you should tell yer Pop to buy a router. The router will divide the internet connection evenly among your 3 computers, and you won't have to leave yours on all the time.

If the laptops are wireless you probably already have a router for the wireless connection. With a router in place there is no reason your computer would have to stay on. That's a common misunderstanding.

DSL Modem / Cable Modem --> WiFiRouter --> Rest of Computers
No Computer then needs to be on all the time. And you'll have the security of a hardware firewall.
Something like the Belkin Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router will solve your problems, and they only run about $40

It will be cut off in Stand-By. They should get another computer for the wireless, or you get a laptop.

why the bother?
buy a switching-router, have it installed directly after the ADSL modem, connect your PC to it, and connect your wireless device to it too, you can have your own net as well as your folks, or you can buy a 4 ports linksys-wireless-router, and do the same scenario
if you need more help and/or details, drop me a line
Enjoy
