There are two kinds of jerks.
1 the funny kind
2 the jerk jerk
I do think jerk # 1 is sometimes necessary, especially here.

I can only speak from having worked with a couple of solid Platinum Jerks (Jerkoffs really) As an amateur psychologist (people watcher) I notice habits and cases of cause and effect in people. And to directly answer your question, I can't believe that being a jerk makes these people happy. They are usually acting out in this way as a result of something that is missing in their own personalities. They exhibit strong signs of insecurity and low self esteem masked by this phony, pseudo-confident behavior. Truth be told, the only time they feel good is when they are causing someone else to feel bad. This allows them to convince themselves that they are okay and happier than THAT person over there. Their feeling of happiness is false, therefore short-lived and they have to find another victim.
The best method of handling this is to not react to their comments or attitudes. To react to them is to signal that they have achieved their goal. And me? I want to make sure they stay miserable until they figure out that being a small minded jerkoff doesn't pay.

The happiness is an illusion. No more than an act. One day, they will sit back in a chair and realize that they're alone. No real long terms friends or relationships. Also, put that person in any stress or suffering. You'll see their happiness disappear and bitterness and hostility come out.
Compare that to someone who puts other people needs ahead of their own. The happiness they have is true, enduring, deep and springs from inside. It's joy. Put them in a situation that has stress or suffering and they'll weather it better. They may even be happy through it.
True Joy. J.O.Y. Jesus. Others. Yourself.

Some people are just borned that way. Sad but true. But no, don't you ever believe being a jerk makes a person happy. That person is probably unhappy and just putting on a smiling mask. It's people who are uncomfortable and a total looser that tend to be like that. It's sad isn't it. Good enough, yes?

NO! Jerks are NOT happy people. Being a jerk is just as hard on the jerk as they are on everybody else. They hide behind their ugly facades.

The key word there in your statement is "seems", so I would presume that you are not definite that he is.
Actually, the jerks aren't really jerks. It is a facade they built for themselves in order to avoid getting hurt by anyone.
It's parallel to: "Hey, look at me. I am tough. I can mess with you but you cannot mess with me."
People like them are surrounded with fear, and may be conscious of it or not.
I know a lot of people who are like this but once you dig deeper into their personalities, you will discover that they're not who they're showing to the world.

We are all jerks. The people who are labeled as jerks it's because they are letting the truth come out. That is why he is happy.

I think it's all fake. Your friend is just pretending to be happy when hurting other people, when inside, he is really hurt himself. I once heard a saying that "hurt people hurt people" so inside he is really stuggling with whatever has hurt him, and to make himself feel better he hurts other people so that he doesn't feel like he is the only that is hurt. So in a way, hurting poeple does make your friend feel better, but only temporarily because he is hurt himself.

A jerk only cares about him/herself. So they have no worries.
