No, 87 is not at all an idiot IQ. It's well within the normal range. Average on any IQ test is 100, with a standard deviation of 15. That means 68% of all scores are somewhere between 85 and 115. While 87 is toward the lower end of that range, it's nothing to be worried about. 95% of scores are between 70 and 130; it's beyond those scores that terms like "retarded" and "gifted" are best applied.
Realize also that IQ doesn't really measure "intelligence". There are MANY facets to intelligence, and an IQ score is just one score on a single test. While this test is better than most in that it divides a couple of different skills, it's still just one test. No one should make life decisions based on a single number.

Depending on the test he took, the overall score (87) isn't very meaningful. You'd have to look at the test manual to see how likely that type of split is for a person your friend's age. When I was learning IQ tests, I tested a friend of mine who had a 30 point split between the factors identifited by the test. By motor IQ- you likely mean nonverbal reasoning- the tasks where you manipulate puzzles or blocks to match a design. Kids I've tested with similar profiles may have trouble learning to read because they have a hard time figuring out the symbols and how they are different (e.g. 'p', 'b', 'd', and 'q' are all sticks with circles in different places).
There are many reasons why this might be a difficulty (and for him it is an issue) medicine could cause you to move slower, as could a cold or other type of illness. There are some people who have severe spatial problems neurologically (think of the people who can't give directions, etc). Those people still function, but know they need support in this area.
As far as being worried, if your friend wants to be a mechanic or electrician, his strengths and weaknesses might be an issue. He can find a career that suits his strengths. There are plenty of options!

Was this a real IQ test or something he found on-line? These categories, "verbal" and "motor", seem odd for an IQ test. Generally there are more subcategories, things like analogies, math reasoning, spatial reasoning, memory, inductive reasoning, etc. So I don't know if this is a valid IQ score or not. I also don't know if your friend took this test under optimal conditions, or if he just blew it off. On a real IQ test, like the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, 87 would be low normal. Generally, if someone is an idiot, it is not his IQ that is at fault but his lack of common sense.

IQ tests are very subjective...not all people perform well on tests. I don't put a whole lot of weight on these scores...but here is some information you inquired about.
Average IQ scores range from 90-110. Any score in that range is considered average. IQ scores are averaged by looking at
verbal ability and perceptual reasoning. Basically, a person can have a strength in one area and a deficit in another and still have an average IQ. When you average the two areas, you get a full scale IQ. In your friend's case, his verbal ability is in the average range. His perceptual reasoning ability is in the low range. When you average the two scores, his full scale IQ is low average. This simply means that his brain processes information differently. He will learn best through verbal or auditory instruction.

100 is average so for it to be average there has to be something on either side. people can have the IQ of a genius and still be dumb as dirt... its all how its used. Also its just a test...A test ... maybe he should try again or a different test also if he learns more then obviously it should get better ...so dont discourage him

But he is still under standard intelligence.
How do they test a motor IQ?
You can skew your own results.
My first IQ test, I got 101.
it was discovered I answered all but 1 English question correctly and got only 1 math question correct.

That puts him at about the 19th percentile, which is a pretty bad area, generally associated with not finishing highschool and getting involved with crime.
Yes it is pretty low, but there might not be anything he can do about it, though his parents should probably look out for his best interests and assist him in making decisions.
He should probably also be tested again to confirm the IQ, and then see a psychologist in a professional setting for the best advice.

The average is 100... but he can take the test again maybe he just had a bad day... your current situations affect the outcome when taking tests.

Well 70 is legally mentally ill. Maybe he should look into some help or something, unless he's happy. He might just have a learning disability or ADHD or something
