i also am a bt broadband customer and i don't use any of bt computer products(not even there anti virus system)
i use comodo firewall its better than windows firewall cause its a 2 way firewall once you install it you have to tell it what you want to allow going in/out..
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
i also use Avast anti virus system ..go and download the home free edition...you get a key(1st time) which last 14 months after that you apply for new key
http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html
also download this free anti-spyware program as well,with all anti-spyware programs you need to check for updates yourself b4 runing scan(its all in the program interface)...go here and download A squared free 2.1
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/
also download windows defender from mircosoft
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
please remember you can only have 1 firewall and 1 anti-virus running on your computer at anyone time BUT you can have as many anti-spyware programmes as you want.....
ALL THESE ABOVE PROGRAMS ARE FREE !!!!!!

Stick with the normal windows firewall , but make sure you keep it up to date with the latest patches from Microsoft , this can be found at
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5
The other firewalls slow your pc down and they don't do such a big different from the windows firewall. However if you are heavy user of the internet and have important data on your pc then i would recommend zone alarm firewall . This will slow your pc down , but it will definitely provide you with the top security , for free as well.

Yes try Zone Alarm Firewall from Zone Labs at http://www.zonelabs.com recognised as one of the best firewalls. I have my firewall set to stealth. I am virtually invisible on the net and I don't get much trouble.

eliminate Norton using the Norton removing gadget. Google it. before you do this set up a competent hearth wall. Zone Alarm? & secret agent ware physician or secret agent ware Detector. rather well worth the money. I even have only bumped off over 5000 specific, 5000 infections from a computing device that ran without protection.
