I just received my welcome package from my new job that I will start on November 27. There's is one problem. They are asking for w2 forms for the last 2 years. Why are they asking for it? Is it to verify how much I was making before? I sort of lied on my previous salary.
What should I do? I am afraid they will terminate the contract if they find out I lied about my salary history. Can I use my stock options and add it to my salary? Isn't that part of my income?

Please help.
Marie

I have never once had an employeer ask for my previous W2's. Why dont you ask them why they need this information? Here is a link with someone who had the same problem:

Call the IRS.Your employer has a legal obligation to send all W-2's no later than Jan 31.If they have not done this you can sue the employer for any penalties the IRS hands you due to filing late.If you worked for this employer for more than one year you should have their federal and state tax ID's on past W-2's you can then use this info to get this years numbers without having a current W-2.

Strange request. You really can't include stock options to your salary but you can include that to your total compensation. Ask them if they want to confirm your compensation (Do not say "salary", but say "compensation"). If they say yes, tell them you will have to also give them the stock option certificate because XX% of compensation is in the form of stock option. If they don't like the answer, next time, you know not to lie about it.

Depending on which state you live in, they should not be asking for your w2 form. You should call your local labor department and ask them if it is legal in your state to ask for that information. (and just as a tip for the future...NEVER LIE about anything on your application or during an interview; lies will come hunting you sooner or later)

I've never heard of that before. If I were you, I would call the HR/Personnel office and asky why they ask for that sensitive information, and you would prefer not to disclose it. Ask if there is a waiver or some other option.

Usually all they ask for is for 2 forms of ID.

Frankly, it's none of their business, and that sounds weird.
