Describing water as "troubled" sets up perfectly for the metaphor of a bridge
watching over it to make things better. With the bridge there, the water will never
be alone, and that is symbolic to the meaning being expressed to the person the
song is being sung to.

The song compares the singer to a bridge over troubled water -- in other words, he is promising to keep his love out of danger. Different people hear different things in this song. Some think it is a lover, others think the bridge over trouble water is provided by faith. Whatever, it is one of Simon and Garfunkle's finest, and they did a lot of great songs.

This song's recording process exposed many of the underlying tensions that eventually led to the breakup of the group after the album's completion. Most notably, Paul Simon has repeatedly expressed regret that he allowed Art Garfunkel to sing this song as a solo, as it focused attention on Garfunkel and relegated Simon to a backing position. Garfunkel said that the moment when he performed it in Madison Square Garden 1972 was "almost biblical". Some believe it was really written to be about the Vietnam War.

Because a boat would sink trying to get across.
In the song I think it means any challenging or troubling situation, when a person needs someone else to help her or him weather the storm. A bridge provides safe passage.

in troubled times we need someone to help guide us and get us through. They are the troubled water and we may be the bridge of support

Refers to anyone who has experienced a trauma in life, they cannot deal with unless they have the bridge. HIs friend is willing to lay down and act as a bridge for his friend to walk across to protect him from danger. Beautiful lyrics to a beautiful song. Another bridge is:
The Bridge of Love (same thing).
THIS HAS BEEN EDITED> I MISQUOTED SOMETHING: NEW QUOTE: "There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love." HOPE THIS HELPS YOU

It's whenever you are having a problem, out of money, feeling small, when darkness surrounds you...the singer is saying that they'll be there for you. Troubled water is just a metaphor for having a rough time in life.

I live in the Lake District near a place called Pooley Bridge. If the bridge is 'Pooley' then surely the water running underneath it must be troubled!
