The answer is 42, as provided by Deep Thought. In computer terms, that is 101010.
It is obvious to me that the question must then be about balance! The universe must be balanced, as in for every "1" there is a "0". Given that we have 3 combinations of 1s and 0s, they must therefore represent the 3 pillars of the universe that must be balanced.
My question: what are those 3 pillars? Mass, space, energy? Good and evil? Religion and Science? Republican and Democrat? Help!!

I just got through speaking with Marvin the Robot and he had this to say on the matter
" You humans enjoy this sort of thing dont you? Here you have been given a nice planet which I totally loathe by the way, on which you get to live out your pathetic lives on, and you dont even know how to ask a simple question to a much superior being. Here I am, a brain the size of a planet...oh never mind, I am just depressed a bit. ah, back to the business of showing you humans that I am more intelligent than you can ever possibly imagine in ten thousand of your lifetimes. The answer IS 42, and for those few of you who are capable of thought, if you have ever wondered if the robot knows the question to the answere to life the universe and everything I can safely say yes. I do know the question. The question is....oh dear, I think my right arm is about to fall off. I dont suppose any of you talking monkeys have a screwdriver handy, no of course not. Why would you? Well I must go now because I have not said this much in over a hundred years and frankly I find it to be loathesome and in bad taste. I have one last thing to say before I completely rust and fall apart: P**S OFF!

I believe the true intent of the answer (42) was to provoke thought and laughter. There could be an infinite number of questions for that answer, just as there could be an infinite number of answers to the question.
Also, if the universe MUST be divided into three pillars for some arbitrary reason, I would guess: entropy (tendency toward disorder), enthalpy (tendency toward order) and void.
The term "enthalpy" should, perhaps, be exchanged for the term "negentropy", or negative entropy. Definitions and opinions vary widely.

The book was meant as a comedy. "what is the meaning of life? 42." Adams was just having fun with numbers. The new question was "how many roads must a man walk down." I guess you just have to appreciate British humour.
