The problem is people dont hold the government responsible for th problems with society. All politicians promise change but don't deliver and the people let it slide. If the people united and reall held the government accoutable for its short comings then things would change. But thats just wishful thinking.

Governments do have a role in shaping general society. Consider a government that doesn't educate its people, or one that encourages hatred of others. Hmmm, wait a second, maybe that won't take as much imagination as I intended...

Because I believe we are all in this together and not every man for himself. Sometimes we get politicians that do not represent the people and abuse their power for personal gain which is why we need government which is the peoples oversight. The government is not a boogie man it is "We the People"

those of us that pay taxes, want and expect something good be done with our money. We do pay enough in taxes to fix problems, in society or otherwise. It's just that the politicians in Washington have chosen to spend our money in other ways. "Bridge to Nowhere" ring a bell.
