I absolutely hate fantasy, but love everything else. I am not looking for a classic like Dickens, as I'm already reading Great Expectations. I'm looking for something with substance but not heavy, romance (NOT hot and heavy), and interesting plot lines. Basically-anything good you've read that is appropriate for a lit class. Thanks!!

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. It's got all of the above. I'm reading it now, and so far it's one of my favorite books.

How about A Confederacy of Dunces? It won a Pulitzer but its incredibly quirky, and fun. Great literature doesn't have to be dry.

I can't remember if The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly has sex in it, but it was a really good mystery.
