Hey hockey girl, aren't you impressed with Dr. Russo's information?? I bet you didn't understand one damn thing he said. So, here is a nurse to answer your question. First of all the good Dr. is wrong. I have been a cardiac nurse for several years. Just changed to hospice a few years ago. If your heart drops to 30 or below, you have a serious problem. I have monitored heart patients on the telemetry unit and in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit. If their heart rates dropped to 30 while they were asleep we were probably about to resuscitate them. Some athletes are so well conditioned that they do have a resting heart rate in the 50's and that is normal for them. Generally a good, healthy heart rate is between 65-80 beats a minute. Your heart rate of 88 is okay. Everyone's heart rate varies to some degree. Hope this helps answer your question.

Normal heart rate is between 60 and 72 beats/min; but 88 isn't unusual. Were you doing something strenuous? Did you have to run to be on time for a class? Were you anxious about something? Did you have some caffeine containing drink? All these things will make your heart beat faster. To get an accurate reading, sit or lie down for about 15 minutes and then check your heart rate.

Heart rate varies by age, activity, and time of day. For an adult - the heart rate at rest should be 50 to 90 with the pulse following diurnal circadian variation. This means that it will peak at around 11 AM with a 2nd lower peak at around 4 PM. During sleep the pulse drops into the 30s and with activity it will exceed 100. The sub-maximal pulse with exercise is 85% of (220 minus your age). A resting pulse above 90 in a physically fit person is a surogate marker for premature cardiovascular disease.

Mine is about 65-75 per minute at rest. It changes with excercise, the average heart rate for humans varies with sex, age, height, and wieght of the individual and excercise greatly changes it. Its just different for eveyone. It is a really fun subject to work with though. The human body is truly just amazing.

Normal is about 60to80/minute. It will change normally due to age, sex, emotions, stature of the body, time ---morning, evening, night and during sleep and during exercise..
