is it illegal to copy actual dvd movies or is it just illegal to copy and then sell. is it ok to copy them for your own personal use?

You can legally make one copy for yourself as a "backup" copy.

It's illegal to copy any copyrighted movie that you don't own. If you do make a copy, it's illegal to sell it.

You can indeed copy them UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. You cannot copy the ones you rent. You can only copy the ones you OWN. When you copy them, you may not charge people to view the copies. Also, you may not "publically display" them for any purpose other than an educational purpose.

If they have copywrites on them it is illegal to make copies, whether for private use or for public viewing, unless you get written permission to copy them from the copywrite holder.

If they don't have copywrites then you are free to make as many copies as you want to.

it is illegal. but for non copyrighted material it isn't, do anything you want with it, spread it thru youtube and google video, upload it thru itunes, limewire, bearshare, burn it to cd's and share it to your friends, show it at your classroom computer, give it to city officials then that non copyrighted thing will dominate the whole world

if you arent selling them then no one is going to find out you copied them and you should not have anything to worry about....right?

i think you can make a backup copy for disks as long as you don't distribute it
