We can't get her to go back to sleep. She's been up for 4 straignt hours. She doesnt cry, she is calm, but she will not sleep when you put her down. She does like to be held but doesn't sleep when held either. What could be causing this?

It's normal for there to be times when they just don't want to sleep. Give her another half hour or so and lay her down.

I wouldn't be concerned as long as she is getting enough sleep and isn't acting like there is anything wrong. Newborns are supposed to get between 16-18 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. That lessens a little when they reach about 3 months. And will usually sleep for only 2-4 hours at a time.

My daughter when newborn would get very alert and excited when her brother and sister would come home from school every day and talk to her and hold her. And would sometimes stay awake for several hours.

Maybe she's just not sleepy.

When she does finally go to sleep she'll probably sleep much longer than usual.

Babies make up the rules as they go along...no two are alike.
