Walmart has a nice small basic mp3 player for under $60. Its a Samsung YP-U2J. It only holds about 120 songs and has a battery that is good for about 8 hours continuous play. And it recharges by plugging into your computer for about 2.5 hours. I haven't managed to destroy mine yet and I'm pretty tough on it. Also its fairly easy to download music onto. The only thing I didn't like was the earphones they were pretty cheap so I picked up a different set. My dog loved chewing on the set that came with it, though.

the best place to go for a real bargain is to check craigslist for your local are. (www.craigslist.org) this should bring you to their main menu with a list of cities on the right hand side. here is where you'll find bargains, unlike ebay which usually doesnt do a great job of that anymore :( other than that you'll have to settle for an mp3 player in the MB (like 128, 256, or 512). good luck.

Try Wal-Mart. There is a brand called ILO. They work well, but are inexpensive. It holds about 64 songs, and you can either just play your songs, play by album, play by genre, or play by artist. It also records and you can listen to the FM radio.
