i have to write a 8-10 page research paper for a US history to 1865 class. i'm interested in slavery/abolitionists or the civil war, but the prof. said they are too broad. any suggestions for a narrowed down topic i could write on? thanks for any help.

Sure, pick a battle or a general for the war. Or try how slavery affected-the war efforts in the South/North, the freed slaves battling for the Union, African American Medal of Honor winners of the Civil War.
There are a million topics in there.

You might want to look at the poetry, songs or first african/american writers during slavery. There were a lot of messages encoded into the stories and poetry (a lot of people dont know this) and the writing is superb. Also most of the quilts that were made by AF/AM slaves, that were hung out to dry on fences, were also codes for escaping, done by the colors and pattern designs. Good luck!!
