you straight shift the bottom and split the top -all the way to the left and down is 1 upand a little to the right is 2 straight back is 3 over and to the right is 4 straight back is 5 now pull the bigger of the two buttons on the shifter UP and with your thumb move the splitter down or BACKWARDS and put shifrter into what was the 2nd gear hole( we are just doing a standard "H" pattern from here) that hole becomes 6/7 using button and throttle ,straight back is 8/9 up and to the right is 10/11 and straight back is 12/13 both of which are over drive ! whew hope that helps

It's a standard H pattern, just like the old four speed manual transmissions. The only difference is there is a "granny low" gear below reverse in the gate to the left of the H.
When you start out, you've got low through four. Most times you can skip low and start out in first. A heavy load or starting on an incline would necessitate starting out in low. After shifting through fourth gear, you need to flip the lever on the front of the shifter up before you make your shift to fifth on the high side. Fifth's location is the same as first gear. After you've shifted to fifth on the high side, you can either shift into sixth, or you can split fifth by flipping the little switch on the left side of the shift knob forward and taking your foot off the throttle. The tranny will then go into 5split once you get back on the throttle. This puts you into a gear which is between fifth and sixth and is useful when pulling a heavy load so you don't have to lose as many rpm between shifts. Once you're back on the throttle in 5split and are ready to shift into 6, you flip the switch back, get off the throttle and move the shifter into sixth. Do it the same way all the way to top gear.
You don't have to split every gear on the high side, but of course you should always split top gear for the best fuel mileage on the highway.
