You can only lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Tell this person that you love them and warn them wear their actions might be taking them. If you really love this person you will stand by their side.

You don't. Others who have answered are right... "You can lead a horse to water..."
However, I have always believed my own twist to this.
Whenever it is that a person is ready to confront a problem, there are multiple ways of viewing the problem. The solutions may be totally unclear.
If there has been someone who planted a healthy seed, the path out of the issue may be that clearer, and save a lot of time and stress.
Or, when the person hears the same thing repeatedly, it may be more persuasive.
Finally, some conclusions a person must come to herself. But sometimes I've done just that, only to realize that I'd heard it literally years before, from someone no longer in my life!! (High school years, etc.) And knowing that someone else had witnessed (x,y,z) made me feel more confident in my new perceptions. Made me more able to perceive things that I was questioning, able to evaluate, and choose a direction. This eliminated a lot of my confusion and self-doubt when I finally got to that point that I could use the info.
So, please lead your horse to water now and again.
And never force it, or it might just buck you in teeth!

They have to see for themselves the immediate effects of whatever behavior it is. Sometimes bad behaviors aren't noticeable for some time and when they are it is too late. Constantly make it clear that you don't approve, but be very sure you don't hinder them at all because there's a good chance they'll stop seeking your attention. Most importantly is to lead by example. If you yourself are doing what's right it tends to rub off on people and they'll follow suit.

If God knew the answer to that He would do it. We have free will. That's all I can say. God tells people over and over the consequences of coming to the material world. But look here we are. We have to change ourselves otherwise we can only give some advice without expectations its the expectation that brings us grief. Not to say we shouldn't tray to convince them. Down South there is a saying that goes "a hard head makes a soft ***". Ever heard this? Some have to learn the hard way no if's, ands, or but's about it. People as a whole generally learn by experience or example.

When we my brothers and I were much younger, one of my brothers stole $20 from my mum's handbag, when she found out she took him down to the Police station and asked the officer to talk to him, they took him to the cells and showed him where people who break the law go.
Sometimes seeing what can come of one's behaviour can help. But then this doesnt work for everyone.

Obviously you can't or people wouldn't eat bad foods, they would exercise, they wouldn't smoke, take drugs, or drink to excess.

People do what they what to do and they always will.

You can't. Until they are ready to admit to wrong doing you just have to pray they discover it before they kill themselves. Nagging don't help, ignoring them don't help either..
