because it is something we do not fully understand and it is so final, an end to the only life we know.
It can also be a very painful process and we are aware of the devastation it leaves behind

What happens when we die? where do we go? is there life after death? do you believe in a god? Those are just a few questions that will ALWAYS be asked by the enquiring mind that can never be answered with any degree of certainty. Which is why they will always be asked. If the answers were known then the questions wouldnt be asked and it is this fear of the unknown, rather than death, that naturally worries people. I myself cannot comprehend the concept of infinity or the theory that existence had a starting point. How existence has no starting point, and therefore no beginning is beyond me. Even further beyond me is the theory that existence magically appeared from nothing. The big bang theory can only take us so far back in time, it cannot tell us what was there before. NOTHING?? What is nothing? Off the point a bit maybe? As i said before, it is the fear of the unknown rather than the fear of death.

I guess so many things add to the reply to this Q.
Some are afraid of death because they view it as THE END.. They believe in no God & no eternal life.. Frankly.. if that were the case (thank God it is not) death would really be scary..
Others are afraid because Death brings Judgement.. They know they will be judged after death.. but not sure of their salvation...
Others are afraid coz death is a mystery.. They don't know what happens, what is behind the great event.. ppl usually get afraid of what they don't know
Some may be afraid coz death can b associated with pain, sickness, suffering.... Death doesn't usually come easy...
We can keep writing reasons for ever.. However.. I guess the more important reasons we should concentrate on are reasons why NOT to be scared of death!! I have one good reason:
Jesus Loves me.. He would never forsake me.. Death may be scary, but not when I am sure he will always hold my hand even when I am crossing the valley of death!! He gave me salvation & he promised to keep protected as his eye pupil! This reason is enough for me
God bless u (sorry for the long reply)

Death is the ultimate mystery and the way you have been brought up to view it will also influence how you look upon death. In cultures where death is celebrated as a new beginning/ journey for the soul - people are not afraid of dying as much - they know that death is just the beginning to something. Then you have those cultures that believe that in death you will be punished / or rewarded for all your deeds on earth - scary. Also in most western culture we do not celebrate death - we do not attend funerals and most of us are well into our adult years when we face the question of death - dependending on your personality and believes this is either a very good thing or the worst thing ever.

It's not so much about death as it is about the unknown. Think about it. Nobody alive knows what it's like to die, except for Jesus Christ. Only our faith assures us of what will become of us after this life is through. A lot of people are just not ready to let go. And then there are those who aren't afraid of death, they're afraid of missing out on life.

Probably because it's irrevocable, and whatever beliefs we have, nobody actually knows what happens next. Fear of the unknown is common, even in more trivial matters than the 'hereafter'.
(as hamlet said : what dreams may come, when we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give man pause...)
If it's the rationalist answer, that we just cease to exist, then it's the ultimate in powerlessness; of course, we won't be aware of it then, but we think about it now.
It could be the becoming dead that horrifies, rather than being dead; a lot of causes of death are unpleasant, and not something to look forward to.

Because people fear the unknown. But actually I heard a statistic that public speaking was the greatest fear, it ranked higher even than death! So people would literally rather die than speak in front of a crowd! I'm not afraid of death or public speaking but spiders terrify me. Go figure. We all have our phobias. Death doesn't scare me. I guess because it seems like such a distant prospect. Plus I'm pretty confident in my chances of getting into Heaven. So I'll be ok! As long as there are no spiders in Heaven!!!

Because there is no one to tell us what the outcome is, who good or bad death is. Us humans are afraid of death because we don't know what comes after.

Due ignorance. Please do note that when people become afraid of death they get scared due the idea they have about it rather than what death really is (nobody has actually come back from the thereafter to tell us anything about it). To put it simply I would say we do not fear death for what it is, but due what we have been told about it.
