I use Mac cosmetics because you can put it on (with a good brush of course) and look very natural. The first responder is right about the color choices. I think the key to all of this is consulting with a good technician whatever makeup you choose and really explore shades before you buy anything. Lighting, how much coverage you need and skin tones are really important in considering a foundation or powder. You can also buy a few mix and match eye shadows which will really enhance your eyes with the proper application. Mac has a wonderful product called eye paint. I have the white/very light shade; apply it ever so slightly to my entire lid and below the eyebrow when I'm in a hurry and all it does is simply brighten my face. You can then blend in darker colors for more drama if you wanted to spend some extra time if your going out. I invest Mac for all my cosmetics except eye liner and mascara (rarely wear). These items I buy at local stores (cover girl or maybelline). Remember with eye liner, apply it to your upper eye lid more towards the middle to the end and then blend well. There's nothing less attractive then a drawn on line that looks like it doesn't belong. I also mix lip color; lip liner then a creamy lipstick followed by a dab of clear gloss.

I see that everyone seems to be a big fan of mac. I have been a Mac user before, and have tried many other types of foundation like Chanel, Clinque, Estee Lauder,(to name a few) but the most recent and most impressive make up(especially foundation) for me would be Bobbi Brown. Its a bit pricey, but definately has given me the best results. Their foundation is not heavy whatsoever, lighter than Mac, and gives fantastic coverage. I've also got their concealer, pressed powder and gel eyeliner, which id also recommend over all the makeup ive tried. Ive had many compliments from girls about my makeup looking so natural, and i never got that when i was using the other brands.

I suggest you ask over the counter, they are all professional makeup artists that are keen to help first time buyers, and they will give you a demonstration of whatever your looking for, and will match your complexion perfectly, not matter the skin tone. I cannot stress how good they are! Its up to you... i suggest... give them a go!

This is a VERY general question...are you looking for a good foundation, or funky colors, fantastic mascara...? There are a lot of good products, and usually one line is really good for one person, but maybe not for another. I love Arbonne's foundation and skin care, but their eyeshadow colors are a bit tame for me. If you are looking for bold colors, I think that MAC is the way to go. But for my mascara, I swear by MaxFactor 2000 calorie. It makes my eyelashes look thick without going clumpy- and it's available at the grocery store- which is a real bonus when you burn through it like I do.
Arbonne's foundation has a color that really blends with my skin tone and it's made with high quality ingredients (no mineral oil) so it helps not age my skin, and doesn't cause blemishes. I figure, if you are putting something all over your face, it should be good for it.

Bare Escentuals / Bare Minerals. I used to use MAC, which is nice but Bare escentuals mineral make up is so much easier to apply and much faster, and looks great. Its so natural you can sleep in it. They have a starter kit on their website, or if you have a Sephora store near you...stop in, check out their starter kits that comes with the brushes you'll need, and theres different colors to match to your skin type. I love this stuff... I'm never using anything else now. My skin is red in some areas, and a little scarred from zits in other areas...with stuff stuff, I look fresh and clean..its covers great and looks natural. Also feels so light.... definately check em out
