Because they are very sheer and very expensive, and the toe and heel keep them from running. The problem with them is you can only wear them with closed pumps or boots, otherwise the reinforcements will show and that is tacky.
I have totally sheer stockings to wear with open shoes, and I think it is totally tacky to go running around all dressed with your painted toenails hanging out of your shoes, no matter how much you spent on a pedicure. Bare feet at formal are really not very appealing, especially at dressy affairs.

No. Sometimes the pantyhose have a reinforced toe but I think what you are describing is mostly on the old fashioned nylons women wear with garter belts. Most younger women just wear tights or pantyhose, unless of course, they are wearing something special for their partners in the bedroom.

YES.. my socks are reinforced for the simple fact that I walk so much, I would and have worn holes in them almost in one day if they weren't reinforced.

Good question. WHATEVER you do however, DONT ASK YOUR WIFE! Asking your wife would be a TERRIBLE idea because then you would actually KNOW the answer from the actual person you're asking about, and then you would have nothing to ask US! Scary, huh?

In the summer I don't because they don't look nice with sandals or open toed shoes but when I wear closed to shoes yes I do. They last longer!.

Yes, I do, because toenails easily poke holes through them otherwise.
