My computer works fine until I want to turn it off.
I click Start, Turn off computer, then the little window appears and I click the red button in the middle to turn of my comp but no matter how many times I press it, the computer will not turn off.
I have had to turn it off using the button on my tower. What has caused this to happen and how can I get my computer back to normal?

You have what's called a deadlock. These are typically temporary files looping and cycling. They will not allow Windows to back down, and out of memory. You need to clean up your computer by using scandisk. Additionally you need to delete your tmp files being used. Go to Windows Explorer and search under the C:\ for *.tmp. When you get your results found delete the files. Go through shutdown and see if it completes. When you pull the power plug you are creating a huge temp file to load up the next time/

I would suggest going to Control Panel and Power Options, make sure your comuputer is not going into Hibernation. I turn all my setting to Never when it asks how long you want things to stay on before going to Stand By. Also check the Hibernate tab and make sure it is unchecked. This can cause your computer to freeze up like that.

You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

First check to see if you need updates to windows. Then check to see when you last ran a virus scan and last but not least see if something is running in the back round.

Press Alt-Crtl-del and use Task Manager to see what applications or precesses are running and stopping the machine from closing - That may give you some clue as to what to look at.

How long do you wait before forcing it off?

Installs sometimes take place during shutdown. You might simply give it 10 or 15 minutes before forcing the shutdown.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Run spybot software like "Ad Aware" or "Spybot Search and Destroy" or both.
