It is impossible to count the number of mountain ranges in the world because there is no single definition of what constitutues a mountain range. Extensive mountain ranges like the Himalaya, the Karakoram, the Hindu-Kush, the Andes, the Rockies, and the Alps are composed of many smaller mountain ranges. The lists below include some of the more important ranges.

The Himalaya range in Northern India. This range includes a number of the world's highest peaks including Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world at 29,035 feet (8,850 m).
