It is impossible to count the number of mountain ranges in the world because there is no single definition of what constitutues a mountain range. Extensive mountain ranges like the Himalaya, the Karakoram, the Hindu-Kush, the Andes, the Rockies, and the Alps are composed of many smaller mountain ranges. The lists below include some of the more important ranges.
