It takes about 4 years to become a teacher. Generally they have a decent enough salary and benefits, but teachers certainly don't get rich on their salaries. Many tradespeople and professionals make more money that teachers. Salaries differ a great deal state to state, province to province, and country to country.
The amount of time off is very misleading - they have a huge amount of after hours work to do, are often expected to participate in extra-curricular activities without pay, and have to do courses for upgrading and renewing their certificates in the summer.
So if you want to be a teacher by all means do so. It is a rewarding career. However, doing it for the perks might not be such a good idea. In my opinion it is a calling and a vocation rather than just a job.

The benefits are usually good, especially if you work for a public school. The pay, unfortunately, is not so good. Some teachers get paid an average of $40,000/year, which is not bad when you are just starting out as a teacher, but could be very little if you plan to live in expensive areas such as NYC or DC - fortunately the government has nice rent and mortgage programs for teachers in some of these areas. If you want to become a professor, the average salary for a tenured professor is about $90,000, but that's a different story. Teachers need a minmum of a bachelor's degree. Some states also require master's degrees and public schools require teaching certifications.

Teachers make adequate money, but not good, say, $40K - $60K (this will vary depending on where you work).
You will not have time for other things. When you're not in the classroom, you're grading papers and making your lesson plans.
Benefits are pretty good.
It will take about six years -- four years of college, followed by another year of college and passing standardized tests.
Then a year of being an assistant teacher or something like that -- you do some teaching, but you don't get your own classroom, and you're monitored by the "real" teacher. (You skip this part if the school district is desperately short of teachers for your subject).
Then, your school district will probably have you do a year or two as a substitute teacher. After that, you'll be assigned to a school and classroom. Enjoy.

Unfortunately teachers don't really make good money. But if it's your true passion then do it and just find an easy way to make a little extra money.
For example, my friend is a teacher and he's also making money off of a site we found called typobounty! They pay you $2 for each typo you find on sites. Just imagine how easy that is for a teacher!

hmmmm, teachers make $80,000 after 6 years of college??? where do I apply? I am in one of the highest paying states for teachers and I have done it for 22 years, but I sure don't make that kind of money.
Teacher pay has gradually increased, but it is nowhere near what is made in the business world. You start out on Step 1, the lowest pay grade, and have to work your way up. And you have probably just spent 5-7 years paying for college. In New York, you must have a masters degree.
So much time is spent on lesson planning and grading papers, and there is other paperwork for the state. And now teachers in NY have to have 35 hours of training each year to keep their license. It is not an easy profession, and we put up with much disrespect.
Just be prepared to be totally dedicated because those kids are all that matters!
