During September of 1960, John F. Kennedy, the Democratic candidate for President, and then current Vice-President Richard Nixon, the Republican candidate for President, took place in the first televised debate. It was a historic moment because, previous to that, only radio debates had taken place. While the radio audience believed the debate ended in a draw, a majority of the television audience felt that Nixon had lost, due mostly to his nervous appearance during the debate. It is also pointed out that the appearance had a negative impact on Nixon's campaign, since he did not wear makeup on camera in the debate and also had a heavy five-o-clock shadow appearing; these factors left a poor public opinion on Nixon in contrast to Kennedy's style and grace in his appearance. Kennedy ended up winning the presidential election.

Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver participated in a televised debate on May 21, 1956 before the Florida primary---four years before the Nixon/Kennedy debates.
