So I recently moved in with two of my friends whom I've known for a little over 1.5 years.
They are pretty sloppy. Garbage can accumulate and dishes reach the sky in the sink. They said they would change their sloppy ways given that I would be moving in and that they didn't want me to hate them for being pigs.
So how can I encourage them to be more organized, and civilized for that matter, and point out that they are not doing what they said they would without seeming hostile or causing an argument?
I feel awkward about imposing on this given that I'm the one that moved in most recently but I pay a third of the rent so I feel I'm entitled to a little cooperation on their part.

Just talk to them and be nice about it. I am a slob and know it is kind of hard to just change all at once. I had a roommate in college just leave me a nasty note one day and that ruined our friendship. The following year I had a neat freak again for a roommate and she would just tell me "could you please pick that up today or your turn to do the dishes". All I needed was a little reminder once in a while and that works. You did move in with them however it is your place as well and they need to respect that. Just say something even in a joking manner they will get it. Good luck and don't just do it for them they will never learn.

Post notes around the house! Hell even go so far as to attach a list of guideline to the fridge!! They can't miss that, I promise you. Last but not least, request a meeting and sit down and explaine your concerns in hopes that they will change to keep from losing a friend/roomate!

I hate roomates and thats why! Leave all the **** in front of thier bedroom doors..LOL. Well just leave it there! Just clean up your stuff. Make a chore list! I did that. The chore list worked! Tell them how embrassing it would be if someone came over. Like a girl!

thats is a tough one cuz u just moved in but, i would just casually ask one of them, to wash the dishes or take turns....or bring it up in a joking matter and maybe it'll remind them to not be sooo sloppy.

heres the deal. You should see the way he dresses. if he dresses nicely you should at least give him a chance. If not then you're on your own.
